We all love dragonflies…some more than others. In the summer months, these aerial acrobats fascinate us as they flit around most any water source, dazzling us with their flying abilities, while helping to keep mosquito populations under control. Did you know that there are 144 species of dragonflies in Virginia, as well as 55 species of damselflies? Or did you even know the difference between dragonflies and damselflies? Bert Harris from nearby Clifton Institute will fill us in on these captivating and beautiful summer residents.

Bert Harris, Ph.D. is Co-Director of the Clifton Institute, a nature center and research station on 900 acres in Warrenton, VA. At the Institute, Harris directs a program of research on ecological restoration with the goal of providing actionable recommendations to landowners. He is also a passionate land manager and works with his team and local landowners to restore native plant and animal communities. Harris holds a B.S. in Ecology and Biodiversity from Sewanee: The University of the South and a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Adelaide, Australia. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Princeton University and is an adjunct professor at American University.
