Arkhaios Film Festival Documentary Film Screening: Athens: Birth of Democracy

We are excited to partner with the Arkhaios Cultural Heritage and Archaeology Film Festival to host an in-person screening of Athens: Birth of Democracy, filmmaker Florence Tram’s compelling documentary on the dramatic origins of democracy in ancient Greece 2,500 years ago.
The film takes viewers to ancient Greece, where citizens seized power, challenging kings and tyrants to create democracy. Through discoveries, reenactments, and expert insight, the film reveals how democracy emerged from conflict and innovation, reminding us that this fragile system remains one of humanity’s most radical ideas.

*The 14th annual Arkhaios Film Festival will occur October 12 – 18, 2026. A free online film festival, Arkhaios is one of a limited number of film festivals dedicated to documentary films regarding archaeological and cultural topics. Originally an in-person week-long festival in Hilton Head, SC, and Pittsburgh, PA held in October, to coincide with Archaeology Week designations in those states, the festival moved to an online forum during the pandemic. Over the past few years a number of in person viewings have evolved, in cities including Mobile, Alabama, Florence, SC, Fort Worth, Texas, and Chicago, Illinois. This year, Washington, Virginia, joins this list as the Rappahannock County Library hosts an official in-person screening.
